This is the first competitive game of Penny Black ever filmed. No one knew what to expect Thankfully, it was a great occasion with a big crowd of spectators on both days and the standard of play from the two young lads, who had played the game for only two years, was incredibly high, so the full match of thirteen games deserves to be seen.

In a best of thirteen games this match went to the last shot of the last game, creating fantastic tension and excitement: just listen to the spectators before game thirteen! Not only that but Darren had never been in the lead until that final shot and lacked the partisan supporter of his opponent.

In that last game there's an incredibly difficult shot (55.48) that only Penny Black players can understand, where the shooter is very, very, very close to the black, and with the last red close behind it. It's almost impossible to play that cannon without sending the black off the board and if that had happened then Scott would have won the match. It's the bravest thing I've ever seen someone do in a final. Darren told me afterwards that he often practised that kind of close play on his desk at the start and end of lessons and if he could get away with it, during lessons as well. He was a bit of a scallywag was our Darren.

If you don't want to watch the whole match then I recommend you start at 50.00. You'll see some good safety play at the end of game twelve and that's followed immediately by the final thrilling game.
